Why budgets alone are not enough
An annual budget is fixed at a point in time. When markets, prices or volumes move, leadership needs an up-to-date view of where the year and the next one are heading. A rolling forecast provides it.
How to build a rolling forecast
- Choose a horizon of 12 to 18 months and keep it rolling forward each cycle
- Identify the key drivers, such as volumes, prices, headcount and conversion rates
- Model at the level management decides at, not at the level of every GL account
- Update monthly or quarterly with input from the business, not only from finance
Scenarios and decisions
Run at least a base, downside and upside case. Agree in advance which actions each scenario would trigger, so the forecast leads to decisions rather than just discussion.
Tools that help
Planning tools such as SAP Analytics Cloud, Power BI or well-structured spreadsheets linked to your ERP keep actuals and forecasts in one place and cut manual consolidation.
